My Week in Triathlon

So much action testing the format of this newsletter! What I’ve read and found interesting over the last week:

  • WTS Abu Dhabi results: Women 1) Beth Potter, 2) Sophie Coldwell, 3) Taylor Spivey. Men 1) Alex Yee, 2) Vasco Vilaca, 3) Manoel Messias. Full results here

  • WTS Abu Dhabi Talking Points: Wilde (42nd) had a flat tyre and a poor swim. Kona champ Iden came 52nd - that’s all a 16:09 5km is good for at this level. Taylor-Brown missed the swim pack, Zafares came 37th, Beaugrand easily had the fastest run of the day…ominous for the French Olympics.

  • Gustav Iden shoes: He allegedly ran in his now banned ON shoes from Kona and they’ve been sent away for confirmation. Possible DQ. Is he wasting his time with the Olympic dream, and will he pivot to focus on Nice?

  • Ali Brownlee pulls back: he pulled out of Ironman South Africa the day before the racing due to an old hip injury flaring up. Bitterly disappointing but it could be the wise move that saves his season.

  • Ironman South Africa: Women: 1) Laura Philipp, 2) Fenella Langridge, 3) Penny Slater. Men: 1) Leon Chevalier, 2) Bard Weiss, 3) Mathias Petersen. Full results here

  • IMSA Talking Points: Swim delayed and then controversially shortened - this race hasn’t had a full swim since 2018! Wurf couldn’t hold on to 4th to qualify for Nice. Trautman lost almost 30min with punctures. Mignon had gear issues and pulled out…leaving him still to qualify for a hometown Nice and possibly having to pull out of Roth. Chevalier and Philipp looked untouchable. Justine Mathieux had her best race crossing the line in 3rd but was DQ’d for not taking a “slotting” penalty on the bike.

  • Quote: What day will you choose to have today?

  • Ironman New Zealand: Women: 1) Els Visser, 2) Hannah Berry, 3) Rebecca Clarke. Men: 1) Mike Phillips, 2) Braden Currie, 3) Jan van Berkel. Full results here

  • Dan Plews: won the IMNZ 70.3 age-group race. Nothing like winning a race to back up your coaching chops.

  • Garmin 965: They’ve updated their top tier triathlon watch to include a fancy pants amoled screen. Now you get to choose 955 for battery and worse screen or 965 for screen and worse battery.

That's it for today, now finish your oats and get back to training!

Yours in low CdA,

Aero MaccaFrodownlee
