Ironman Hamburg: Full Results here

Tragically overshadowed by a motorbike crashing into an age-grouper. Amberger’s post sums it up here. Frodeno was leading with about 16km left to run but faded into 4th…if running a 2:38 marathon can ever be considered “fading”?!

Men

🥇 Denis Chevrot (7:26:20)

Other Bullets:

  • ObsTri Social Stats: I’m a sucker for data and have often wanted to analyse how popular each pros Youtube channels and Instagram accounts are. Lucky for me ObsTri has already done this here

  • Hamburg Transition: Special shout out to T1 in Hamburg being 800m long! It’s so difficult to not lose too much time but to also not spike your heart rate with such a long barefoot run.

  • Discord: It’s an app/website where people can chat around a similar topic or interest. There are 3 triathlon “servers” that I have joined: The Daily Tri , Lionel Sanders Racing, and The Athlete Penthouse.

  • Roglic out of TdF: Not triathlon but Roglic is not going to join Jumbo-Visma at this months Tour de France. Will it be Jumbo-Visma vs Pogacar again? Also stay tuned to the Tour de France documentary on Netflix being released on 8 June. It’s a similar concept to Forumula 1’s Drive to Survive.

  • Ibiza BTS: I was nearly threatened with divorce while watching the 32min behind the scenes video from PTO Ibiza in bed on Friday night. Watch for Frodeno (2min) being asked to show his race number and how epically fast Neumann (19min) and Haug (26min) look while running.

  • Quote: “Human beings operate on beliefs, and so, optimism and pessimism matter.” - David Roberts

  • Mindspace: Gwen Jorgensen had her worst race last weekend in Cagliari. She was pulled off the course after getting lapped on the bike. Highlighting how important optimism is, her race recap speaks about getting stuck in a thunderstorm, being bitten by a dog and her family getting sick. I find it nigh impossible to perform if there’s an inkling of instability in my personal life.

Data

This weekend I played around with the swim, bike and run rankings of the top 10 overall ranked athletes. Let me know what you found interesting. Here’s what popped out for me:

  • Men’s field is a lot more consistent than ladies at the moment.

  • If you’re going to have a weakness, it’s best if it’s the swim.

  • Ryf’s run is a massive outlier as she’s traditionally been one of the strongest runners.

  • The best over all three disciplines are Charles-Barclay, Gentle, Blummenfelt and Neumann

I’ve got data on each athlete’s wetsuit, bike and running shoes and re-performed the above analysis on the top 10 ranked swimmers, bikers and runners. I’ll share that next week as this newsletter is already too long - don’t want to tempt you to find the unsubscribe link!

Yours in low CdA,
