My Week in Triathlon

Race results making it a bit long this week, reply and let me know what I should cut out:

  • European Cup results:

    • Women: 1) Cassandre Beaugrand 1:56:29, 2) Audrey Merle 1:57:18, 3) Jeanne Lehair 1:57:36.

    • Men: 1) Vetle Thorn 1:46:36, 2) Fabian Meeusen 1:46:38, 3) Joao Pereira 1:46:41. Full results here

  • European Cup titbits: Beaugrand builds momentum for the Olympics by dominating and having the fastest run. The top 14 men were all within 1min of each other with 8 seconds separating the top 5. Thorn put his hand up for Norway while Iden only managed 14th with the 11th fastest run and a very poor swim. Brownlee mixed it up but faltered at the end coming 7th with the 9th fastest run.

  • World Cup New Plymouth results:

    • Women: 1) Nicole van der Kaay 1:02:57, 2) Ainsley Thorpe 1:03:06, 3) Solveig Lovseth 1:03:14.

    • Men: 1) Hayden Wilde 55:57, 2) Tayler Reid 56:32, 3) Ricardo Batista 56:32. Full results here

  • New Plymouth titbits: Jorgensen is bitterly disappointed with her 14th place (video here). This was Wilde’s first World Cup win. 8 men ran under 15 min for the 5km.

  • Hell of the West results:

    • Women: 1) Ash Gentle 3:42:45, 2) Ellie Salthouse 3:46:30, 3) Kylie Simpson 4:00:33.

    • Men: 1) Max Neumann 3:20:11, 2) Kieran Storch 3:28:15, 3) Josh Amberger 3:30:56. Full results here

  • HotW titbits: Gentle rolled her ankle the week before the race. Salthouse dropped a water bottle on the bike and needed to fetch it to avoid a DQ.

  • Geelong 70.3 results:

    • Women 1) Grace Thek 4:10:10, 2) Radka Kahlefeldt 4:12:39, 3) Lotte Wilms 4:14:28

    • Men 1) Mike Phillips 3:40:00, 2) Steve McKenna 3:40:39, 3) Nick Free 3:41:57. Full results here

  • Geelong titbits: Thek is racing Oceanside this weekend. Phillips possibly over biked and was being hunted on the run - 5min lead cut to 39 seconds at the line.

  • Davao 70.3 results:

    • Women: 1) Sarah Crowley 4:20:14, 2) Lauren Brandon 4:22:49, 3) Lottie Lucas 4:25:09.

    • Men: 1) Filipe Azevedo 3:51:09, 2) Ognjen Stojanovic 3:52:28, 3) Tuan Chun Chang 3:57:12. Full results here

  • Davao titbits: Brandon had a good run only being 2:32 behind Crowley. The age-group race had a stuff up with the swim buoys - the swim time was disregarded from the overall finishing time.

  • Renee Kiley: The Aussie pro triathlete weighed 104kgs in 2013 and hadn’t exercised in years. On the Nutritional Revolution podcast she mentioned that her breakfast before work was a sugar-free Red Bull and a cigarette! She also implied finding the right purpose instead of the right diet is key for weight loss.

  • Plews on training: On the How They Train podcast, Dan Plews gave a really simple explanation on his training methodology. Crude summary: Based on the goal, identify the specific areas needed to improve. Do specific training to target these areas using HR/Power/Pace to monitor. Recover to absorb the gains using HRV to monitor. Repeat.

  • Maurten BiCarb: They’ve just released their Bicarb system which has been thoroughly tested by Jumbo-Visma. Sodium bicarbonate has long been known to buffer lactate and improve high intensity performance but has always led to stomach issues. This system wraps the bicarb in the same hydrogel that their gels use, improves absorption and eliminates side-effects. Link here

  • Sanders rolled the dice: He took a last-minute chance to race Challenge Miami, crashed, got sick on the way back home and is now missing Oceanside. Disappointing for him…even worse for us fans!

  • Quote: “Amateurs get fancy. Professionals practice the basics.”

  • Richard Murray: Was under the radar in Namibia this last weekend. He won a small African Cup while running 14:39.

From my Instagram

How many people make their first triathlon an Ironman? I see it often, but hey, "you do you," and it's cool if this is how your cookie crumbles. The issue I see is that this can turn into "one and done," and the bike gets put on Ebay😔

I'm a fan of nailing the short distances and having fun racing. All while focusing on sustainable training that adds value to your life rather than unwelcome pressure.😎

I overshot and did an Ironman in 2011 without having any stability, focus, or consistency in my life. The result showed🤢 and I took off a few years from the sport. I started up again in 2015 focusing on nailing the short stuff, which resulted in me nailing some 70.3's in 2019, 2021 and 2022. I plan on taking my learnings into my second ever Ironman in 2024...13 years after my last one!🫣

That's it for today, now finish your oats and get back to training! If you have any feedback or suggestions, please reply and let me know!

Yours in low CdA,
