Race titbits: Noble won wearing a sleeveless trisuit (how anti-trend!). World leader Gentle only came 3rd at Peniscola - I can’t find her post race feedback but am very interested to hear it. Le Corre won his 3rd long course race in a row. Haug had another stellar swim and bike to add to her usual unbeatable run. Laidlow backed up his Kona podium re-writing his label from “lucky” to “contender”. Lange was solid coming 5th at Gran Canria, but his weak bike will hurt his chances for reaching the top. Matthews continues her dream comeback and smashes the run after an “average” swim and bike. Skipper put himself out of contention at Texas by taking a wrong turn on the bike and called it a day to preserve himself for future races. Von Berg was great on the bike - especially after having to stop to take his swim-skin off mid-cycle. Hanson had an age-grouper crash in front of him which took him out of the Texas race. Marquardt came 3rd only 21s behind von Berg in his pro debut - he was the Kona age group winner last year.
McCauley Sundays: I only just found out that Jocelyn McCauley is a Mormon so will not race on a Sunday. This means that she is unable to race Kona this year and will focus on other races.
Super shoes innovation: Triathlon coach Andrew Woodroffe tweeted: “If everyone thought the last couple of years of super shoes was wild and innovative just wait for Paris next year! Was fortunate enough to see something today that is equally impressive and insane for footwear!” He’s based in Zurich so can we assume he’s referring to the On Cloud brand?
Marathon updates: I mentioned Kipchoge would be running the Boston marathon - turns out he only came 6th and this is only the 3rd time he hasn’t won a marathon out of 17 starts! Yesterday, Kelvin Kiptum smashed the London Marathon course record and was only 16 seconds off Kipchoge’s world record he set in Berlin. It feels like a legitimate sub 2hr is imminent!
Earning vs Deserving: Pat Lemieux spoke on the Pro Tri News podcast about Gwen Jorgensen, his wife, having to earn the support of USA Triathlon and any opportunities she gets…she (and all of us), doesn’t automatically deserve anything. Have a listen from around 40min of episode 113 for the context.
Quote: “Comparison is the thief of happiness.” - I’ve been running between 40 - 60km every week this whole year. My wife is training for the Comrades marathon and is running far more than me. It, stupidly, makes me feel “unfit”! DON’T compare yourself to others all the time!
