My Week in Triathlon

What I’ve read and found interesting over the last week:

  • Lanzerote 70.3 results: Women 1) Anne Haug 04:16:46, 2) India Lee 04:28:37, 3) Elisabetta Curridori 04:36:41. Men 1) Justus Nieschlag 03:54:56, 2) Mathis Margirier 03:55:12, 3) Thor Bendix Madsen 03:56:50. Full results here

  • Lanzerote Observations: Pallant-Browne made a tough call to pull out before the race due to illness. Haug smashed the run averaging 3:37/km. Nieschlag flopped at the Arena Games but clearly his altitude training is paying off for the longer distances.

  • Challenge Puerto Varas results: Women 1) Lucy Byram 04:20:51, 2) Haley Chura 04:24:33, 3) Laura Siddall 04:26:28. Men 1) Tom Bishop 03:45:02, 2) Matt Hanson 03:50:50, 3) Mitch Cunningham 03:52:34

  • Puerto Varas Observations: Byram has firmly arrived with two wins in two weekends. Bishop has also announced himself as a force and will be potent if he can get into the PTO races…this result moves him to 30th.

  • Africa Cup Action: A small race but some notable names. Jamie Riddle won with Richard Murray coming 7th with a fastest run time of 30:14 for the 10km. Rachel Klamer came 4th. Amber Schlebusch is notable for coming 2nd and she beat Katie Zafares just over a week ago in Sarasota.

  • Podcast Must Listen Nice vs Kona: The debate (arguments!) about IM moving the mens World Champs from Kona to Nice has been raging. IMTalk spoke to James Cunnama about his thoughts. All I’ll say is Bring on Nice! Listen to episode 862 here.

  • Kessler Prolific: I heard on the Triathlon-ish podcast that Meredith Kessler has done 71 full distance Ironman races. She started in 2000 so that puts it at an average of 3.1 races a year for 23 years!

  • Pros sponsor pros: There are some new opportunities opening up for new pro triathletes. Waterfall Bank did it first with their Pro Project where they are “taking care” of two athletes for 2023. Now TTL have started recruiting for their “Devo Team” and I heard the boys at Triathlon Mockery are also looking to sponsor someone.

  • Shoe Scandal: It’s old news now but someone linked to the Norwegian squad reported Gustav Iden for wearing “illegal” running shoes at the WTS race. The shoes have since been cleared…enter conspiracy theories. What I didnt hear a lot of noise about was Pen Slater wearing the On Cloud Monster shoes at IMSA - Tim Heming mentioned that they aren’t on the “approved list”.

  • Cape Epic: The world famous mountain bike race kicked off yesterday (19 March). Notable for triathletes in that Sebi Kienle and Ben Hoffman paired up a few years ago to race it. This year age-group Kona winner in 2019 Donovan Geldenhuys is racing. More on Donovan below

  • Geldenhuys Kona: It’s not well known but Donovan Geldenhuys was the age-group Kona champion in 2019 after crossing the line 3rd. First place was disqualified for racing as a pro that year and second place got caught for doping.
