Luxembourg 70.3: Full results here

First pro win for Taaggholt. The main contenders were basically together throughout the swim and bike with the run being the differentiator.

Men

🥇 Miki Taagholt (3:49:19)

🥈 Christophe de Keyser (3:50:46)

🥉 Filipe Azevedo (3:51:42)

Simpson lost almost 13min on the swim but made up all but 30s of that deficit on the bike. Crowley lead the bike but was seen violently (seriously) throwing up on the run and only managed 4th. Currie ran 2hr37 for the marathon to break Max Neumann’s course record by 3min. 41yr old and 2012 Kona champion Pete Jacobs came 4th thus qualifying for Nice World Champs.

Women

🥇 Kylie Simpson (8:40:52)

🥈 Radka Kahlefeldt (8:58:48)

🥉 Penny Slater (9:05:49)

Men

🥇 Braden Currie (7:50:10)

🥈 Steve McKenna (8:00:59)

🥉 Tim van Berkel (8:04:54)

Wilms gained over 10min in the swim over her main competitors and largely held a big buffer to 2nd place the whole race. Wurf FINALLY qualified for Nice World Champs. He exited the swim with the main pack, out-biked Petersen by almost 5min and hung on to 2nd place.

Women

🥇 Lotte Wilms (8:56:51)

🥈 Gabriele Obmann (9:02:55)

🥉 Laura Zimmerman (9:04:04)

Men

🥇 Mathias Petersen (7:56:39)

🥈 Cam Wurf (8:02:42)

🥉 Georg Enzenberger (8:08:28)

Reischmann made up a deficit on the swim to start the run in the lead and held on to win. Look out for Kleiser who ran 1:16 for the 21km. The PTO has her run ranked as #15…it’s only her second year as a Pro I’m predicting she may be the next Anne Haug 👀. Stepniak won the race on the bike and only just held on to the win after giving up almost 5min on the run. This is his second win in two weekends.

Women

🥇 Anne Reischmann (4:12:58)

🥈 Agnieszka Jerzyk (4:14:32)

🥉 Daniela Kleiser (4:14:51)

Men

🥇 Kacper Stepniak (3:44:25)

🥈 Ognjen Stojanovic (3:45:11)

🥉 Marcel Bolbat (3:45:18)

Other Bullets:

  • Huatulco Results: There was a “second tier” short course race in Mexico this weekend most notably featuring American stars and new mum’s Jorgensen and Zaferes in a race (literally) to qualify for the Olympics. Jorgensen came 2nd while Zaferes struggled with the heat to come 12th. Full results here

  • Hydration: I’m a massive fan of Precision Hydration for racing and after years of “bonking” I am now able to race to the end. I was helping a colleague this last week with their hydration/nutrition plan for a 100 mile trail run and I showed him the Case Studies they have on their website. Check out Jason West’s report from PTO Ibiza here and all the reports here

  • Fat vs Carbs: Alan Couzens posted a representation of our typical carb vs fat stores in our bodies and highlights how NB it is to try and access some fat stores during training. See post here

  • All The Toys: I joke that the reason I do Triathlon is for the toys. I’ve been wanting needing a new pair of cycling shoes and the new ones from Fizik have caught my eye after seeing Ali Brownlee promoting them. Now just to try somehow get them to South Africa! Product page here

  • Tri vs Cycling: Everyone knows that Cam Wurf is on the pro cycling team Ineos and is basically moonlighting as a triathlete these days. When watcing The Daily Tri video here, I heard that Taylor Knibb will be riding for the Trek Segafredo team this weekend. In similar news, Paula Findlay is currently training for the Canadian TT champs which she won last year.

Data

After Sam Long’s dominance at Boulder 70.3 last weekend I did a little data gathering exercise to compare his race performances vs Lionel Sanders. Lionel has traditionally always come out on top and been a huge inspiration to Long. The last 12 months has seen Sanders struggling with Long out-biking him by almost 4 min last weekend. I have based all of Lionels times to 100, so a number of 103 means that Sam was 3% slower. A number of 97 means that Sam was 3% faster.
