My Week in Triathlon

My triathlon thoughts and learnings over the last week. Hit reply if you have feedback…even if it’s to say “see you in Nice” because I’ve just booked my flights to go watch 😁

Bartlett had to surmount an almost 3min deficit after the swim with all other contenders together. Bendix Madsen made a break on the bike and started the run almost 3min ahead of Pallant-Browne. Pallant-Browne dominated the run to comfortably win while Bartlett came from behind to take second. In the mens race, Nieschlag took a handy 30s lead after the swim but a puncture and stomach issues caused him to DNF. Horsfall-Turner powered to an almost 6min lead off the bike but Benito Lopez caught him with 10km left to run.

Really disappointing day for Crowley with stomach issues forcing her to give up a solid lead on the run. She only managed 2hr05 for the 21km and this is the second race in a row that she’s had stomach issues. Unranked Matute had a great result beating Toldi who is currently ranked 100th.

Women

🥇 Elizabeth Bravo (04:30:10)

🥈 Anna Torres (04:48:45)

🥉 Sarah Crowley (05:04:31)

Visser was dominating the race up until 25km left to run. A mechanical issue on her bike forced her to stay in a hard gear so her legs were beaten and she was all but ready to give up. She credited her finishing to Vesterby (4th) who encouraged her to continue. Larralde is one of the more “under-the-radar” athletes with her solid bike and potent run combo.

Women

🥇 Gurutze Frades Larralde (08:46:17)

🥈 Svenja Thoes (08:53:17)

🥉 Els Visser (09:08:59)

SO much action so I’m going to fail miserably to summarize! Beaugrand really was in control and her 10s winning gap looked like an eternity. Spivey was 7th around 25s behind. Zaferes had a little fall/crash in T2 which set her back to only come 18th. Jorgensen made the finals but only came through in 30th. Wilde took an amazing line in the final corner of the bike and backed this up with an flawless transition to give him a small gap that no one could close. Blummenfelt was 4th 6s back and Hauser was a further second behind. Iden didn’t make the finals.

Women

🥇 Cassandre Beaugrand (00:21:35)

🥈 Beth Potter (00:21:45)

🥉 Laura Lindemann (00:21:47)

Men

🥇 Hayden Wilde (00:19:26)

🥈 Vasco Vilaca (00:19:28)

🥉 Alex Yee (00:19:28)

Other Bullets:

  • No Escape from Alcaraz: Not triathlon but, seeing as though our wonderful sport is going to be as big a tennis (obviously), Carlos Alcaraz beat Djokovic in the Wimbledon finals yesterday. This is only the third time in 20yrs that someone without the surname Djokovic, Federer, or Nadal has won.

  • TDF Update: Pogacar has kept picking up seconds on Vingegaard over the last week - now only 8s behind. There was a moto incident yesterday where Pogacar attacked but two motorbikes blocked his progress allowing Vingegaard to catch up.

  • Random Fact: Emma Pallant-Browne’s brother is a professional ballet dancer.

  • Findlay Engagement: Likeable pro triathlete couple Eric Lagerstrom and Paula Findlay have finally gotten engaged. See Paula’s post on Instagram here (including the obligatory photo of the ring).

  • PTO US Open Start List: The US Open is on the 4/5 Aug and it’s going to be a HUMDINGER - check out the start list here.

  • Podcast news: I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Mark Matthews from Pro Tri News interview journalist Tim Heming here. PTN can be quite chaotic at times so this was a nice change in pace for them. The popular Youtube channel The Daily Tri has also just started a podcast here.

  • Quote: “At every party there are two types of people. Those that want to go home, and those that don’t. The trouble is, they are usually married to each other” - Ann Landers. Who else fulfils this triathlete stereotype while their spouse is tearing up the dancefloor?

Data

I’ve been travelling for work a lot the last few weeks (off again tomorrow) so I haven’t done anything interesting with data. The PTO website is a treasure trove of stats so I thought I’d share one of their head to head graphics below:
