My Week in Triathlon

My triathlon thoughts and learnings over the last week. Let me know what you think or if you have feedback or suggestions!

  • WTCS Yokohama results:

    • Women 1) Sophie Coldwell, 2) Rosa Maria Tapia, 3) Taylor Knibb

    • Men 1) Hayden Wilde, 2) Matt Hauser, 3) Vasco Vilaca

  • 70.3 Gulf Coast results:

    • Men 1) Sam Long, 2) Lionel Sanders, 3) Jackson Laundry

  • Challenge Frejus results:

    • Women 1) Magda Nieuwoudt, 2) Aurelia Boulanger, 3) Julie Lemmolo

    • Men 1) Bart Aernouts, 2) Cyril Viennot, 3) Ognjen Stojanovic

  • Race titbits: Knibb is BACK after her injury. Taylor-Brown with another disappointing swim and 7th place. Blummenfelt 8th, Vetle Thorn 12th and Iden 39th in the battle of the Norwegian qualifiers (I still think Iden is going to pivot and win Nice). Quenet was 3rd at Gulf Coast but was DQ’d after taking a wrong turn on the run - he’s appealed the DQ. Long dominated Sanders and Laundry, keen to hear the race recaps to find out why. Kienle was winning but a bike penalty knocked him down to 9th at the start of the run - he finished 4th overall.

  • Nieuwoudt Heart Advice: Magda Niewoudt won the ladies race at Challenge Frejus. Read this short story she wrote about having to stop training in 2018 due to heart issues. Article here

  • Team Sutto Team China: Brett Sutton is coaching the Chinese National triathlon team. He’s one of the most successful coaches in the sports history but also one of the most polarizing. Read the short blog post from him here. They got a 34th and a DNF this last weekend in Japan.

  • Sam Long “fires” Plews: After only 4 months, Sam has split up from Coach Dan Plews. He went from having some disappointing results to winning two races in two weekends. Has he chosen short term success over long term greatness? Time will tell.

From Twitter

Tim Heming raised the question about whether athletes who chose not to race PTO Ibiza last week made the right decision. Talbot followed up wondering about how the Strength of Field will have changed. I took the opportunity to run some numbers:

That's it for today, now finish your oats and get back to training! If you have any feedback or suggestions, please reply and let me know!
