Byram had the fastest bike split by 9min and Bishop by 7min. Byram backed this up with the fastest run by 3min. Palmer had the fastest men’s run but Bishop was only 30s slower. Strange that Byram’s tri-suit has no sponsor logos on yet after her 3rd win of the year and being ranked 36th.

Knibb beat Lawrence by 8min - using PTO Ibiza as a crude benchmark, she would have come out with LCB on the swim, had the fastest bike and just stayed ahead of Gentle on the run to take 2nd (pure speculation but a fun exercise). Long was too strong - unbelievably dominant on the bike out splitting Sanders by 4min and running 1min quicker than him. Sanders had a sprint finish just nudging ahead of Leiferman. Shout out to under-the-radar Tomas Rodriguez who came 4th with his strong running ability. Read about Appleton’s drafting penalty here - I may sound melodramatic but it’s a similar theme as Hamburg: narrow over-crowded roads and high speeds…just without the tragedy.

Women

🥇 Taylor Knibb (3:56:33)

🥈 Holly Lawrence (4:04:38)

🥉 Jeanni Metzler (4:05:25)

Men

🥇 Sam Long (3:33:22)

🥈 Lionel Sanders (3:38:12)

🥉 Chris Leiferman (3:38:13)

🥉 Anne Reischmann (4:17:47)

A foreshadowing race for World Champs Nice with a very technical and mountainous bike course. Frenchman Mennesson rode 7min into the chasers and Free ran strong to jump from 6th to 2nd after losing 10min on the bike to the leader. The steep downhills are where the gaps are made as highlighted by Free after the race: “We have no mountains like that in Australia… they were flying downhill. I was really afraid they were going so fast, but these guys are not afraid of anything, and they just pass me so fast!!”

Women

🥇 Imogen Simmonds (4:43:03)

🥈 Giorgia Priarone (5:01:39)

🥉 Lina-Kristin Schink (5:09:27)

Men

🥇 William Mennesson (4:09:48)

🥈 Nick Free (4:15:10)

🥉 Nathan Guerbeur (4:16:03)

Skipper was upbeat “only” coming 3rd as he strongly favours the full distance over this shorter distance. Costes got a flat 11km into the bike and rode most of the way with 2bar pressure - he ran himself from 16th to 11th. He also gets the award for steamiest Instagram profile picture here.

Women

🥇 Margie Santimaria (4:32:07)

🥈 Emma Bilham (4:34:28)

🥉 Marta Bernardi (4:39:28)

Men

🥇 Menno Koolhaas (3:55:27)

🥈 Ognjen Stojanovic (3:59:35)

🥉 Joe Skipper (4:01:21)

🥈 Josh Lewis (3:56:30)

🥉 Benjamin Goodfellow (3:58:30)

Big comeback race for Buckingham after having a herniated disc in July last year. She dominated with the fastest swim, 3rd fastest bike and fastest run. Stepniak outclassed the rest on the bike and held on to win from a fast-charging Taagholt behind who ran 4min quicker.

Women

🥇 Lucy Buckingham (4:04:34)

🥈 Lottie Lucas (4:09:10)

🥉 Justine Guerard (4:12:45)

Men

🥇 Kacper Stepniak (3:37:41)

🥈 Miki Taagholt (3:40:05)

🥉 Robert Wilkowiecki (3:40:07)

Other Bullets:

  • Clear Goggles: Laura Philipp says she prefers to swim with clear goggles in the morning to promote cortisol. Maybe something to consider when buying your next pair. See her post here

Shout out to Rudy von Berg (hit by a car), Sam Laidlow (liver infection), Matt Hanson (crashed bike) and Trevor Foley (stomach issues) who are dealing with some issues. Who else needs a shout out?

A reminder that insurmountable setbacks can be overcome: Matt Sharpe (collapsed lung), Lucy Buckingham (herniated disc), Taylor Knibb (stress fracture), Kat Matthews (hit by a car), Patrick Lange (bike crash), Matt Trautman (hit by a car), Jan Frodeno (hip infection), Tim O’Donnell (heart attack), Lucy Charles-Barclay (stress fracture).
