My Week in Triathlon

My triathlon thoughts and learnings over the last week. Let me know what you think or if you have feedback or suggestions!

  • Arena Games London results:

    • Women 1) Beth Potter, 2) Cassandre Beaugrand, 3) Sophie Linn

    • Men 1) Nicolo Strada, 2) Henri Schoeman, 3) Kyle Smith

  • London titbits: Potter beat Beaugrand for the first time in Arena Games. Strada was untouchable and dominated the men’s race. Iden raced bravely to finish 5th having to surmount two 5s penalties. Smith looked strong, particularly on the bike - domestique for Paris ‘24 to make sure Wilde gets to T2 in the lead?

  • McQueen conspiracy theory: I moved this to it’s own bullet to not distract from the good performances. Men’s favourite, McQueen, started chuckling during the first run and immediately dropped to last place. After the run the camera picked him up shouting: “horse sh!t, horse sh!t”. In the second round he lost so much time on the run he decided to do butterfly for the whole 200m swim?! Bad treadmill? Cue the conspiracy theories.

  • Arena Games - more thoughts: This race was disappointing for me. There was lots of talk about this being the World Championships, but most of the athletes weren’t in the running due to them not doing all the races in the series. On that note, Linn and Schoeman were crowned World Champions. The producers are clearly trying to pander to the crowd because every second question in every interview was “what do you think of London and this crowd?!”

  • ObsTri: Christophe Balestra has created a little triathlon treasure trove under the website ObsTri. Most will know the site for the fantasy league but there is a great aggregation of triathlon news too. He’s recently developed a PTO points calculator under the “tools” section. Christophe was previously the CTO for the PTO.

  • MMA vs Triathlon: You may know that Paul Felder (ex MMA star) is now an avid triathlete. I enjoyed listening to him being interviewed by Joe Rogan and “fan-boying” about Lionel and the other pros. There’s a 7min video on youtube here.

  • Holly Lawrence Passion Project: Holly is now on Youtube under the channel name @passionprojecttriathlon. I’m sure it sucks for the pro’s having to also be “influencers” these days but personally it does go a long way towards becoming a fan of an athlete. View her first video here

  • Personal news: I was in a car accident on Tuesday - the whole “construction vehicle smashing into me, down a bank, airbags deploying, oncoming freeway lane” variety. I’m FINE! I’m bringing this up not for sympathy but rather to say that as an age-grouper it became apparent how NB it is to not neglect other areas of our lives, such as family, in the pursuit of a few extra placings in one’s age-group. Hope you know what I mean?
