Another “downhill” swim causing some very fast times! Priarone had a small deficit after the swim but hit the front of the race by 20km of biking and never looked back. In similar fashion, Foley had a 2min deficit after the swim but was leading the race by half way on the bike. He started the run with a 3min lead and finished over 5min ahead. Controversy at the finish line with Matt Sharpe coming 3rd but being disqualified for having his zip “undone”. I’ll give more context later.

🥇 Giorgia Priarone (04:11:24)

🥈 Amy Cymerman (04:16:51)

🥉 Nicole Falcaro (04:18:09)

WTCS Sunderland: Full Results here

Beaugrand was in a lead pack of 7 until the last lap of the bike when they were caught. Only Lombardi was able to run with Beaugrand until the decisive break up the last hill. Jorgensen had the 2nd fastest run of the day but finished 24th after not making the pack on the bike. French domination in the mens race too. Bergere ended the bike with a 10s lead but was quickly caught. Wilde was an early mover on the run but the Frenchmen caught and eventually dropped him in the last 500m. A sprint finish saw Le Corre coming from behind to take the tape from Bergere.

Women

🥇 Cassandre Beaugrand (00:59:53)

🥈 Emma Lombardi (01:00:11)

🥉 Annika Koch (01:00:17)

Men

🥇 Pierre Le Corre (00:54:06)

🥈 Leo Bergere (00:54:06)

🥉 Hayden Wilde (00:54:21)

Other Bullets:

  • Matt Sharpe Tri Suit: As mentioned, Matt Sharpe was DQ’d for crossing the line (in 3rd) with his zip undone. Seems ridiculous but, as it often is, it’s nuanced. Most race suits have a normal zip that once pulled down can easily be pulled up. I stalked Matt’s instagram and found his Giordana race suit and you can see how it “disconnects” at the bottom which puts it on the wrong side of the rule. View suit here.

  • Sunderland no show: Many of the top athletes decided not to race the WTCS in Sunderland this last weekend - mainly to “focus” on the Olympic test event in 2 months time. Disappointing for the British fans as they have some strong super stars like Potter, Yee, Brownlee, Coldwell and the injured Taylor-Brown.

  • Le Tour Femmes: The ladies Tour de France finished up yesterday with an epic weekend. HC mountain top finish up the Tourmalet on Saturday and the ITT on Sunday. Vollering smashed the Tourmalet and backed this up with the 2nd fastest TT. Team SD Worx took a clean sweep on the TT podium yesterday. Take note of how aero Reusser is in this stage recap here.

  • Marathon Times: Tim Heming shared some data from Strava on the marathon finish times distribution for 2022. He notes the “spikes” around certain milestones i.e. sub 4hr, sub 3hr etc. and how mental marathon running is. See tweet (x) here.

  • PTO DNS: The PTO US Open this coming weekend has unfortunately had a few stars pull out as reported by PTN here: Marten van Riel, Ali Brownlee, Chelsea Sodaro, Laura Philipp, Ruth Astle and Rach McBride. Wishing those injured a speedy recovery.

  • Sodaro fine line: There’s been lots of “shade” thrown to Chelsea Sodaro after the PTO video here. It’s obvious after the Ibiza preview video and this one that either the producers or herself is trying to “sell” or communicate the confidence of the current world champion. She has struggled terribly with mental health since Kona (read article here) and I hope that she’s finds her feet and can endear herself to the hyper-critical public.

Data

After France bagged 4 out of 6 podium places at WTCS Sunderland, I thought I’d look into the last two years podium distribution per country. Clearly Great Britain and France are doing something right!

That’s it for today.
