Ironman Lake Placid: Full Results here

Alberts took the lead just before half way on the bike. She started the run with just over a minute ahead of Naeth. Favourite McBride came 7th. This is only Albert’s second year racing pro: she came 11th at IMLP last year, 5th at IM Arizona and 6th at IM Texas 👀. After the swim, Amberger had a 2min lead on Beals and Hoffman and 4min lead to Skipper and Hanson. By halfway on the bike, Skipper was in the lead with Amberger close and Hoffman and Beals 90s back. Hanson was 6min behind. An exciting run saw Hoffman chasing down Skipper to come within 90s with 21km left to run before Skipper turned on the pace. Beals struggled on the run to finish in 10th.

Oregon 70.3: Full Results here

Lewis rode herself up from 15th to 2nd during the bike with almost 90s to make up on Becharas on the run. Mission accomplished as she comfortably won. The swim had a strong “down current” which allowed Sanders to only lose 1:49 on the swim. By 50km on the bike he had made up 22 places to be riding up front with Ulloa and Foley following closely. Ulloa and Sanders started the run together with a small 30s gap back to Foley. Sanders ran away (literally) with it while Ulloa and Foley were in touching distance (figuratively) of each other for most of the run. A fast closing Dubrick came 4th only 22s behind Foley. Check out this 90s post-race interview from Sanders here 🤯.

Women

🥉 Batya Beard (04:11:41)

🥇 Lionel Sanders (03:33:36)

🥈 Martin Ulloa (03:37:10)

Other Bullets:

  • Sync Evo Pro: Last week I was geeking out over the Holly Lawrence aero testing video here…particularly her aero extensions by Sync. My interest was further piqued when I saw Pogacar riding them at the infamous TT on Tuesday! More about that TT in the data section below.

  • Mark Allen vs Tim Don: Tri247 reported on Tim Don having a go at 6 times Kona winner Mark Allen telling him that his thoughts are outdated and triathlon has progressed. The following article is Allen’s rebuttal - check out how Allen does a “mic-drop” after the “Best Regards” by stating his palmares 🤌 Article here.

  • Macca vs PTO: Staying with Tri247, they also reported on two-time Kona winner Chris McCormack having a typically candid opinion on the PTO’s ambitions in Triathlon. Article here. Personally, I don’t understand why he feels the PTO races are only worth watching the highlights?!

  • 105 and counting: Sean Conway has just finished his 105th Ironman in 105 days. Yup, no typos in that sentence. BBC article here and Sean’s own page with tracker here.

  • High Performance Tri Parenting: I had quite the training day yesterday. It started with a 30min Zwift ride. After that, we took our daughter to the outdoor pool which was about 14 degrees. She was desperate to swim so I put my 2XU wetsuit on and floundered around for about 30min up to my chest in the water with her legs dangling in while I bounced her up and down singing “ring a ring a rosie…”. I did manage to smash out a quick 100m freestyle 👊. In the evening we took her for a “ride” on a new balance bike…roughly another 30min of walking in a semi-squatted position, straddling the back wheel, working my glutes while helping her stabilize. And this morning…STIFF!

Data

It’s all about the Tour de France this week. I was travelling for business so missed the infamous time trial on Tuesday where Vingegaard SMASHED everyone. I spent the next few hours catching up, gathered some numbers and put the following graphic out to my struggling socials. Vingegaaed went 5% faster than Pogacar…that’s equivalent to Gustav Iden having beaten Sam Laidlow by over 23 minutes at Kona last year! Or Chelsea Sodaro beating Lucy Charles Barclay by almost 26 minutes!

Vingegaard ended up winning by over 7 minutes at the end but somehow it still feels like he is the underdog. The below chart shows the difference in seconds that Pogacar was behind Vingegaard at the end of each of the 21 stages. Pogacar “took time” back on 5 stages (green arrows), while Vingegaard only “took time” on 3 stages (red arrows)…but boy did he make those 3 attacks count!

That’s it for today.

Yours in low CdA,
