Social Stalk

Philip Gonçalves is a father and husband from the UK. Oh, he’s also a trainer, coach, fitness enthusiast and Ironman. He recently posted one of his short motivational reels on Instagram about the anticipation of something often being worse than it actually is.

This caught my eye as I’m currently reading “Awaken the Giant Within” by Tony Robbins and the book presented the following quote:

“If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment.”

Marcus Aurelius

How many times have we procrastinated on the couch or at the pool deck allowing the anticipation of the workout to grow and become overwhelming. How many times have those same “overwhelming” workouts been very enjoyable and provide us with dopamine and motivation?

Shall we just do the workout, “let go of the anxiety and anticipation” and let the happy feelings flow? View Philip’s profile here for more tips and motivational posts.

Also, worth checking out his blog - try and guess which post contains the quote: "…just smile and nod, even if you do want to throat-punch them instead.”

Youtube

This week I’m bringing up three of my favorite but older triathlon videos.

  • Specialized: this is the first “a day in the life” video I ever watched, and I had downloaded it in 360p and put it on my old iPod classic to watch over and over. It takes a look at a training day of Jan Frodeno in Stellenbosch. My favorite part was him being at a track late in the evening while the whole world seemingly carries on with life as usual.

  • Specialized: in the same series as the above video but this was following Tim Don. These two definitely romanticize the idea of being a professional triathlete and kicked off my dreams to “turn pro” …it was good to be young and naive!

  • Tugs Tavern: this special little video is a two-part documentary hosted by Bruce Dern about the 1982 Kona World Champs. The second video has an amazing quote that Bob Babbit and Paul Huddle often featured on their podcast (before podcasts became a thing!): “…this is it. The last hour of this triathlon, on the pavement, in 110 degrees, that’s where we’re going to find out who our Ironman really is!” As a side note, the Tugs Tavern was owned by 1979 Kona winner Tom Warren.

Tri Toys

  • Form Swim Goggles: these goggles are really finding their way onto more and more faces - so much so that I’m feeling very tempted to order a pair. The second version that introduced open water swimming came out over two years ago so maybe a version 3 could be on their way? What will make me a better swimmer: expensive AR goggles or swimming more than once a week?!
