Battle Scars

Tasmania 70.3 - 5th February

Women’s Results:

Race favorite Ellie Salthouse won but by less than 1 minute. She was strong across all 3 disciplines but her run was faster than all the other top contenders and enabled her to come out on top. Veteran Ai Ueda from Japan had the fastest run of the day and came 7th overall.

  1. Ellie Salthouse: 04:25:07

  2. Grace Thek: 04:26:05

  3. Penny Slater: 04:29:35

Men’s Results:

Short course racer, Jake Birtwhistle, tussled at the front of the race the whole day and found his running speed to be just good enough to win his first half distance race…by 15 seconds! Pre-race favorite Braden Currie pulled out of the race during the week as he wanted to support his son post a bike accident. Josh Amberger was a bit off the pace on the run and finished 4th.

  1. Jake Birtwhistle: 03:49:20

  2. Mitchell Kibby: 03:49:35

  3. Caleb Noble: 03:50:16

Social Stalk

Kat Matthews was on track to have a dream year in 2022 after coming 2nd in St George World Champs, winning both Swansea and Lanzerote 70.3’s and smashing the “Pho3nix Sub 8”. She did have a relatively poor showing at the Collins Cup (11th) and PTO US Open (9th) but sometimes these poor performances are the platform to build something truly memorable…winning Kona. That was until she was hit by a car while preparing for the World Champs in Hawaii. This post caught my eye because I am so looking forward to Kat finding her feet again and mixing it up with the best. She’s talking about “hope” and “opportunity” which are sometimes the only things a lot of us have to rely on at times…BUT…are often the only things we need to achieve. Click to follow Kat.

Hope and opportunity

Youtube

  • Matt LeGrand: he’s known more for his tech videos but this short motivational video about putting the work in hits home - particularly as I haven’t done so on the swim!

  • Gwen Jorgensen: it’s really great to see Gwen back on the bike. She seems to be setting expectations low by mentioning the team relay but I’m fascinated to see how she competes. It’s also weird but great to see the juxtaposition between her killing herself on the bike and the commentary mentioning her “complications” with having late night baby feeds etc.

  • Joe Skipper: this is a great little insight into Joe Skipper’s “crew”. It seemingly couldn’t be further away from the structure that the “Norwegians” adhere to but is very entertaining to watch. “I only planned to run 3:20/km’s for the 5km tempo”.

Tri Toys

  • On Running: in a big push to dominate the triathlon market, the Swiss running brand now has Javier Gomez, Chelsea Sodaro, Kristian Blummenfelt, Paula Findlay, Gustav Iden, Matt Hanson and Frederic Funk as athletes. It will be interesting to see how the running shoe count changes in 2023.

  • Canyon: in similar vein to On, Canyon has stepped up on the bicycle side and signed both Kat Matthews, Chelsea Sodaro and Sam Laidlow. This is in addition to Jan Frodeno, Lionel Sanders, Patrick Lange, Kyle Smith, Daniel Bakkegard, Laura Philipp, Sarah Crowley and Florian Angert.

Tri AI

Inspired by the below tweet likening Donald Trump’s return to Twitter as training for a Triathlon, I asked MidJourney AI to show me Trump training for a triathlon:
