Light on races but still LOTS to talk about!

Hello! You're reading the Aero Oats Newsletter! Especially curated by me - Aero MaccaFrodownlee.

Today's newsletter contains:

  • Battle Scars Review: Ironman 70.3 Pucon Chile

  • Shaving legs for: Nothing yet, still hairy.

  • Social Stalk of the week: Hannah Wells on Insta

  • Tube Releases: Ruth Astle, Lionel Sanders and The PTO

  • N + 1: HumanGo, Kollektiv and Wahoo Systm on (or not) AppleTV

  • Tri AI: Limerick of Triathlete vs Cyclist

Battle Scars Review (aka race results)

Only one race this last week which was a half distance held in Pucon, Chile.

Emphatic win for Barb Riveros on home soil who used a strong bike and run to secure the win. This result shouldn't see too much movement in the PTO rankings. Her time is similar to last year which netted her around 60 points. Her current lowest counted race is Alpe d'Huez which netted her over 80 points so she should stay in 31st.

Women's Results:

  1. Barbara Riveros: 04:26:48

  2. Romina Biagioli: 04:39:45

  3. Brittany Higgins: 04:45:56

On the men's side Spaniard Antonio Lopez had a comfortable win finishing off with a 1:13 half marathon to get the job done. Similar to Barb above, this result is relatively below last years "Ideal Time" and shouldn't be enough to replace his top 3 scoring events from the last 52 weeks. Will have to wait for the PTO to publish their Ideal Times and completely contradict my best guesses!

Men's Results:

  1. Antonio Lopez: 03:55:13

  2. Martin Ulla: 03:59:20

  3. Marc Dubrick: 04:00:00

Shaving legs for (aka upcoming races)

It's still early days so no high profile races planned for the upcoming week. On the horizon we have Oman 70.3 and Tasmania 70.3 as well as the Europe Winter champs.

Social Stalk of the week

Congrats to Hannah Berry for winning an epic 4,6km open water swimming race in New Zealand. It's always great to see multi-disciplined triathletes succeeding in a single sport race.

Tube Releases

Triathlons Youtube game is strong! Here are some that caught my eye:

  • Ruth Astle shows us the money and discusses how much she earned in 2022 as a pro triathlete. It's not often you get someone willing to be so candid about their earnings! It's been great to follow Ruth as she's risen through the AG ranks, into the Zwift tri-academy and now into the Pro realm. Her first pro year was in 2021 and she has a recap video on that which is also worth a watch:

  • Lionel "The Lion" Sanders shows us he hasn't changed...by changing his approach yet again. If nothing else, it's worth watching to get fired up for 2023 if you don't mind the strong language. Maybe this is a good change? Using his own recipe for success is arguably better than trying to out "Norwegian the Norwegians":

  • PTO giving us a world-class production to wrap up an EPIC 2022 season and what a season it was. It truly felt like 2022 was an inflection point in Triathlon as a truly professional and world-class sport. Just need to get more and more people into this amazing sport:

N + 1* (aka Gear)

A strong software theme this week:

  • HumanGo: James Cunnama from GTN is using an AI driven software platform called HumanGo (not Hu-Mango as he was pronouncing) to train one of his colleagues. It looks to offer dynamically changing sessions based on your recent workouts and goals. It also seems to offer services for coaches and some sort of social integration with their "tribes" feature to help motivate athletes. They have free access to the app with basic functionality and three other tiers ranging from USD9 up to USD29 pm. Link here.

  • Kollektiv: Similar to above but less automation and more focus on the social aspect. They seem to also punt their knowledge to help athletes learn. Part founded by now retired multiple champion Helle Frederiksen and now supported by Lucy Charles-Barclay via her "own Kollektive" which costs around EUR29 pm if you sign up for an annual plan - here's the link to Team Charles-Barclay.

  • Wahoo Systm not on AppleTV: This is just a bit of news for those that use the AppleTV. I found this to be the best way to use Zwift and when i joined Systm to train up for a recent 70.3 i was disappointed to see it does not work on AppleTV - leaving me to have to hack around with mirroring my cellphone screen. Their website and various posts in forums have mentioned this is "coming soon" - turns out they have changed their mind and recently announced that this is unlikely to be available. Currently assessing my alternatives for 2023.

*n + 1 is commonly known as the formula to calculate how many bikes a person must own.

That's it for today, now finish your oats and get back to training!
